Reasoning Router is a Hermes gateway plugin that classifies each incoming Discord, Telegram or Buzz message and sets a per-session reasoning effort before the model request is made. Small talk stays cheap and engineering work gets more effort.

What Reasoning Router does

The plugin registers two Hermes hooks. pre_gateway_dispatch runs before a message reaches the agent, classifies it with deterministic heuristics and sets Hermes' session reasoning override, so the effort reaches the provider as request configuration rather than prompt text. It fails open: if anything is missing, the message goes through unchanged. post_llm_call notices when the assistant asked for approval to proceed, so a short reply such as 'yes' inherits the planned task's effort instead of being treated as trivial.

Efforts range from none and minimal through low, medium, high and xhigh to max, with pattern groups for architecture, security, configuration, debugging, operations and simple acknowledgements. Codex's 'Ultra' label is accepted as an alias for max. Routing decisions can be logged to the gateway journal or a JSONL file. An optional semantic classifier on an OpenAI-compatible endpoint is disabled by default and only handles ambiguous cases.
