Hermes Crawl4SearXNG

GoSlowPoke168/hermes-crawl4searxng

Hermes plugin that backs web_search with SearXNG and web_extract with Crawl4AI, all self-hosted

In short

Hermes Crawl4SearXNG is a Hermes Agent plugin that gives the native web_search and web_extract tools a self-hosted backend. SearXNG handles search through the provider bundled with Hermes, and Crawl4AI handles page extraction.

What Hermes Crawl4SearXNG does

Hermes Crawl4SearXNG keeps the tools Hermes models already know and swaps what runs behind them. Search goes to SearXNG using Hermes's own bundled provider, which only needs SEARXNG_URL set. Extraction goes to Crawl4AI, which is this plugin's contribution because no bundled Hermes provider wraps it. The plugin registers a real WebSearchProvider through ctx.register_web_search_provider, so it adds no custom tool names and does not collide with the built-in web toolset.

Two extras ship with it. The save_finding tool writes a cited research note to ~/.hermes/knowledge/ as markdown, with optional sources appended as a list. The deep-research skill follows a search, extract, synthesize, cite and optionally save workflow. The install.sh script starts Crawl4AI and SearXNG in Docker, generates secrets on first run, syncs the URLs and token into the Hermes .env, enables the plugin, sets web.extract_backend to crawl4ai and restarts the gateway. It is safe to re-run, and uninstall.sh keeps data unless --purge is passed.

Key features

  • Self-hosted SearXNG search and Crawl4AI extraction behind Hermes web_search and web_extract
  • Registers a WebSearchProvider with no custom tool names
  • save_finding tool for cited research notes in ~/.hermes/knowledge/
  • Bundled deep-research skill for search, extract, synthesize and cite
  • install.sh that provisions Docker services, generates secrets and wires Hermes
  • Bundled and symlink install modes, plus uninstall.sh with an optional --purge

When to use it

  • Giving a Hermes agent web research without a paid search API
  • Extracting LLM-friendly page content from sites through your own Crawl4AI instance
  • Saving cited findings from research sessions into a local knowledge folder
