Hermes Town

sxuff/hermes-town

Local pixel-art town that shows live Hermes Agent sessions and tool calls as moving residents

In short

Hermes Town is a local pixel-art interface for Hermes Agent in which every resident represents a real Hermes execution context. Tool calls send residents to different buildings, so you can watch what the agent is doing.

What Hermes Town does

Residents walk to the library, workshop, forge, post office, observatory or town hall depending on the tool being called. Completed sessions rest at the tavern and eventually walk home. A bridge in the Hermes plugin sends events to a local server on loopback, normally at http://127.0.0.1:4187, and the browser draws the town. Version 0.3.0 packages the bridge, server and prebuilt town together, so runtime use needs Hermes and Node.js but not a repository checkout or a frontend build.

The README lists what the plugin publishes: a pseudonymous resident key derived with HMAC, one of seven role classes, one of seven lifecycle kinds, a sanitized tool name, one of four outcome classes, and a skill name only when HERMES_TOWN_SKILL_NAMES=1 is set. Prompts, messages, tool arguments and outputs are not included. The hermes town command has start, status, stop, open and setup subcommands and works per profile. A scripted demo runs in the browser with simulated sessions.

Key features

  • Residents mapped to real Hermes execution contexts
  • Tool calls shown as trips to library, workshop, forge, post office, observatory and town hall
  • hermes town start, status, stop, open and setup subcommands
  • Per-profile operation with distinct ports for multiple profiles
  • Privacy model that publishes only pseudonymous keys, role classes and sanitized tool names
  • Browser demo with simulated sessions

When to use it

  • Watching a long-running Hermes gateway's tool activity at a glance
  • Seeing which of several profiles is busy
  • Showing how an agent works to colleagues without exposing prompts

Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who want a visual, low-detail view of agent activity.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Built for Hermes Agent as a plugin and local server that observe real sessions and tool events.

How to install Hermes Town

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

hermes plugins install hermes-town
hermes plugins enable hermes-town
hermes town start

Requirements: Hermes Agent 0.21.2 (the validated preview baseline) and Node.js ^20.19.0 or >=22.12.0

Note: The packaged install path depends on a reviewed catalog pin update, and the earlier v0.2.0 release contained only the bridge.
