Hermes Walkie Talkie

Secure same-machine peer messaging for independent Hermes Agent sessions

In short

Hermes Walkie Talkie is a standalone Hermes plugin that lets independent Hermes sessions on the same computer find one another, exchange messages and coordinate work. Delivery is local, with receipts and no central daemon.

What Hermes Walkie Talkie does

Hermes Walkie Talkie lets separate Hermes sessions on one computer message each other without copying text between terminals. It is a standalone plugin with a small harness-neutral Python core (agent_peer) and a Hermes adapter (hermes_peer). Sessions can send direct messages with receipts such as delivered, held, refused or unreachable, send structured requests that expect a reply, or broadcast to named groups with a result for each recipient.

Each profile gets a stable identity and each live session a short-lived one. Messages travel over Unix-domain sockets on Linux and macOS, or Windows named pipes with SID-bound ACLs, with no central coordinator in the path. If a recipient is busy, delivery is held until the host's queue-safe boundary rather than interrupting the active turn. It is deliberately local: no network connections, TCP service, remote execution or file transfer, and cancelling a request is advisory. It adds peer_list_agents, peer_send_message and peer_read_inbox tools, the /peers, /peer-name and /peer-policy commands, and an optional Desktop panel.

Key features

  • Discovery of live Hermes sessions owned by the same OS user
  • Direct messages with delivered, held, refused or unreachable receipts
  • Named groups and bounded broadcasts with a result per recipient
  • Structured requests with status updates, idempotency and advisory cancellation
  • Local inbox, health snapshot and content-free metrics
  • Unix sockets or Windows named pipes with no central daemon

When to use it

  • Telling a backend session about a schema change and asking if the migration is finished
  • Coordinating two or more Hermes sessions working on the same project
  • Broadcasting a note to a named group of sessions

Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who run several sessions on one machine and want them to coordinate directly.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

It is a Hermes plugin, enabled as hermes-peer in config.yaml, that adds peer tools and slash commands to each Hermes session.
