Free web search, X search and page fetch skill for models that lack native web access
ModSearch is a search skill that gives agents web search, X search and single-page fetch without a signup or API key. It works in Claude Code, Codex, Pi and OpenCode, and the repository is tagged hermes-agent.
What ModSearch does
ModSearch targets models that have no web access or only a weak one, such as DeepSeek and GLM when used through an API. Its default engine is Firecrawl's keyless tier, which the README describes as 1,000 free credits per month with no account, API key or card. If a channel fails or runs out of quota, the next engine takes over automatically.
Optional engines include Antigravity CLI, Tavily, Exa and Grok Build for searching X, plus a local page fetcher. Keys live in ~/.modsearch/config.json and can also come from environment variables, and several keys per engine can be listed so authentication, rate-limit and quota failures rotate to the next key. Results come back as structured JSON evidence that includes an uncertainty field. It is presented first as a plugin for DeepSeek Harness (dsh) and installs as a skill through skills.sh.
Key features
- Web search, X search and single-page fetch from one skill
- Works out of the box on Firecrawl's keyless tier with no signup
- Automatic failover across Firecrawl, Antigravity CLI, Tavily, Exa, Grok Build and a local fetcher
- Rotates between multiple keys per engine on auth, rate-limit or quota errors
- Returns structured JSON evidence with an uncertainty field
When to use it
- Adding live web search to a model that has no browsing of its own
- Fetching and summarizing a single web page from inside an agent session
- Searching X (Twitter) through Grok Build when it is installed
Who it is for: Developers whose agent or model cannot browse the web and who want a free search option with fallbacks.
