Portable Agent Skills

ch1109/portable-agent-skills

Three host-neutral skills for research, repository deployment and pre-install safety review of skills

In short

Portable Agent Skills is a collection of three SKILL.md skills: topic-research, github-project-deployer and skill-safety-checker. They are written to work across Hermes Agent, Codex and other Agent Skills hosts, and install into Hermes through a tap.

What Portable Agent Skills does

topic-research turns a vague research question into a traceable decision brief, separating facts, source claims, inference and unknowns. github-project-deployer inspects a repository read-only, shows an execution plan, and requires an explicit gate before any code runs. skill-safety-checker reviews an unfamiliar skill and ends in a decision to enable, isolate, fix or reject, with static findings treated as candidates until context confirms them.

The design aims at portability. Each skill checks what the current host can actually do before assuming tools, network or permissions, keeps host-specific install steps out of the skill core, loads detailed checklists progressively from reference files, and requires visible evidence before declaring a task done or safe. For Hermes the repository follows the skills/NAME/SKILL.md tap layout, so hermes skills tap add registers it. It also contains a Codex plugin manifest, a read-only Python scanner used by the safety checker, and a unittest suite that validates frontmatter, links and accidental secrets.

Key features

  • topic-research skill that produces a traceable decision brief
  • github-project-deployer skill with read-only inspection and an execution gate
  • skill-safety-checker skill that ends in enable, isolate, fix or reject
  • Read-only Python scanner that reports candidate findings, not verdicts
  • Hermes tap layout plus a Codex plugin manifest
  • Repository tests for frontmatter, broken links and secrets

When to use it

  • Comparing three approaches to a market and getting one recommendation with evidence
  • Deploying an unfamiliar GitHub project in the smallest reversible environment
  • Auditing a downloaded skill before enabling it in Hermes

Who it is for: Users of Hermes Agent, Codex and other Agent Skills hosts who want reusable workflows with explicit evidence and safety gates.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

The repository documents Hermes Agent as an install target through hermes skills tap add and hermes skills install, while keeping the skill core host-neutral for Codex and others.
