Five-layer skill retrieval plugin for Hermes Agent: triggers, FTS5, synonyms, embeddings and RRF fusion
Eagle Eye is a Hermes Agent plugin that narrows a large skill library to the five most relevant skills before each API call. It combines keyword triggers, FTS5 search, a synonym dictionary, dense embeddings and rank fusion, without modifying Hermes core.
What Eagle Eye does
Hermes Agent loads every installed skill into the system prompt as a flat list. Eagle Eye narrows that list before each API call to the top five candidates and injects them as a lightweight hint. The README estimates the full list costs 5,000 to 10,000 tokens per turn once you have 50 or more skills.
Retrieval has five layers. L1 is deterministic keyword triggers, and a hit injects the full SKILL.md at once. L2 is FTS5 BM25 text similarity, L3 a synonym dictionary, L4 dense embedding similarity, and L5 fuses the rankings with RRF. If the score is below the threshold, it stays silent and the LLM decides. Each layer fails independently, so a missing sentence-transformers or jieba package only removes its own layer. A generate_config.py script scans your installed skills to draft triggers and synonyms, and prompts for LLM-assisted generation are included.
Key features
- Hard triggers that inject a full SKILL.md on a keyword hit
- FTS5 BM25 text matching and a synonym dictionary
- Dense embedding similarity with a swappable model through HERMES_EMBEDDING_MODEL
- RRF fusion of the layer rankings
- Confidence gate that stays silent when no skill matches
- generate_config.py to draft triggers and synonyms from your skills
When to use it
- Helping Hermes pick the right skill when you have dozens installed
- Cutting the token cost of a long skill list in the system prompt
- Making rarely used skills easier for the agent to find
Who it is for: Hermes Agent users with large skill libraries, including Chinese-language ones, who want better skill selection.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
Built as a Hermes plugin that filters the skill list before each API call, with zero core modification.

git clone https://github.com/willingning-coder/eagle-eye.git
cd eagle-eye
python scripts/generate_config.py
bash scripts/install.shRequirements: Optional sentence-transformers for the dense embedding layer and jieba for Chinese text; each layer degrades independently if its package is missing
FAQ
What is Eagle Eye?
Eagle Eye is a Hermes Agent plugin for skill retrieval. Before each API call it reduces a long skill list to the five most relevant candidates using five layers of matching.
How do I install Eagle Eye?
Clone the repository, run python scripts/generate_config.py to draft your config, then run bash scripts/install.sh. Restart the gateway afterward with hermes gateway restart.
Does Eagle Eye change Hermes Agent core files?
No. The README describes it as a zero-invasive plugin with zero core modification, and the language model keeps the final decision on whether to load a skill.
