Literate programming skill that turns a codebase into a .lit.md document and tangles source back out

In short

litprog-skill is a SKILL.md for literate programming that has an agent write a codebase up as a narrative .lit.md document and extract the source files back out of it. The repository description names Claude Code, OpenCode and Hermes Agent as target harnesses.

What litprog-skill does

Literate programming, introduced by Donald Knuth in 1984, writes programs as essays for human readers with code embedded in the narrative. This skill asks the agent to analyze a codebase and produce a .lit.md file that weaves prose, Mermaid diagrams, LaTeX math and syntax-highlighted code, presented in the order that is easiest to understand rather than the order a compiler needs.

Three scripts support the loop. scripts/tangle.ts extracts source files from the .lit.md. scripts/untangle.ts is a reverse-sync engine that updates the document when source files are edited directly. scripts/hook-reverse-sync.ts is a PostToolUse hook for Claude Code that runs that sync automatically. Running /literate-programming on an existing .lit.md only weaves and tangles it again, and PDFs are produced with Pandoc. The README is written around Claude Code, and its installation steps copy SKILL.md into .claude/skills.

Key features

  • Generates a .lit.md narrative from an existing codebase
  • Tangler script that extracts source files from the document
  • Reverse-sync engine for edits made directly in source files
  • PostToolUse hook for automatic reverse-sync in Claude Code
  • PDF output through Pandoc with Mermaid diagrams

When to use it

  • Writing a readable architectural narrative for a codebase
  • Onboarding new team members with a document that also generates the source
  • Keeping documentation and code in sync when files are edited directly

Who it is for: Developers who want agent-generated literate programs, using Claude Code or another skills-compatible agent such as Hermes.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

The repository description lists Hermes Agent among the harnesses the skill targets, although the README's install steps cover only Claude Code.

How to install litprog-skill

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

git clone https://github.com/tlehman/litprog-skill.git
mkdir -p your-project/.claude/skills/
cp litprog-skill/SKILL.md your-project/.claude/skills/literate-programming.md

Requirements: bun to run the tangle script, and pandoc, xelatex and mermaid-filter to produce a PDF

Note: The README documents installation only for Claude Code, and the repository has no license file.

FAQ

What is litprog-skill?

litprog-skill is an agent skill for literate programming. It has the agent turn a codebase into a .lit.md document that mixes prose, diagrams and code, and a tangler extracts the source files from that document.

Does litprog-skill work with Hermes Agent?

The repository description names Hermes Agent as a target harness next to Claude Code and OpenCode. The README documents installation only for Claude Code's .claude/skills folder.

What do I need to run litprog-skill?

Tangling uses bun to run scripts/tangle.ts. Producing a PDF additionally needs pandoc, xelatex and mermaid-filter.
