What OpenMail for Hermes Agent does

Once installed, the plugin runs as a Hermes gateway platform. Inbound mail arrives over a websocket, so no public URL or webhook is needed, and the last event ID is stored so a restart replays missed messages. The adapter re-fetches each message from the API before acting, so a forged frame cannot impersonate a sender. Two gates control who can write to the agent: OpenMail's server-side allow and block rules, then Hermes's own allowed-user list.

Three modes are set with OPENMAIL_MODE. In channel mode, mail starts a turn and the answer goes out as the reply. In notify mode, mail is summarized and sent to your home channel such as Telegram, Slack or Discord, never to the sender. In tool mode, inbound mail is ignored and the agent only uses tools on request. Native tools let the agent send, reply, list and read threads, extract attachment text and create inboxes. Hermes profiles can each get their own inbox-scoped key.
