Desktop command room for running Codex, Claude Code, Hermes and other coding agents in embedded terminals
Athena is a local Electron desktop app that runs AI coding agents, including Hermes, side by side in embedded terminals. It also ships an MCP server so Hermes can inspect sessions, message panes and spawn terminals in the running workspace.
What Athena does
Athena is a local desktop workspace for running AI coding agents side by side. It is an Electron and React app with a local FastAPI backend, and it embeds real terminals through node-pty and xterm.js. From one window you can launch shell, Hermes, Codex, OpenCode, Claude Code, Athena Code and Grok panes, singly or as a four-pane grid, and keep one tab per project workspace.
A Sessions tab discovers native Codex, OpenCode, Claude Code, Athena Code and Hermes sessions already stored on disk, so they can be resumed, renamed or hidden. A chat view reads native messages from those agents, with terminal output as a fallback. For Hermes specifically, an MCP server in the mcp_server folder lets Hermes inspect sessions, message panes and spawn visible Athena terminals. A machine switcher can show terminals from another of your computers over Tailscale.
Key features
- Embedded PTY terminals for shell, Hermes, Codex, OpenCode, Claude Code, Athena Code and Grok
- Four-pane grids with drag-to-reorder, resize, minimize and maximize
- Sessions tab that lists and resumes native agent sessions found on disk
- MCP server that lets Hermes drive the running desktop workspace
- One tab per project workspace with attention badges for background work
- Machine switcher for viewing another computer's terminals over Tailscale
When to use it
- Run Hermes and a coding agent such as Codex or Claude Code in adjacent panes on the same project
- Resume an earlier Hermes or Codex session from a single sessions list
- Let Hermes open and message Athena terminals through MCP while it works
Who it is for: Developers who run several terminal-based coding agents at once and want one local window to manage them.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
Athena supports Hermes among several other agents, with Hermes sessions discovery and a dedicated MCP bridge that lets Hermes control the workspace.
FAQ
What is Athena?
Athena is a local desktop workspace for running AI coding agents side by side. It is built with Electron, React and a FastAPI backend, and it embeds terminals for several agents in one window.
Does Athena work with Hermes Agent?
Yes. Hermes can be launched in an Athena pane, its native sessions appear in the Sessions tab, and an MCP server in the repository lets Hermes inspect sessions, message panes and spawn visible Athena terminals.
Is Athena free and open source?
The repository has no license file, so default copyright applies and you should check with the author before reuse. The source code is public on GitHub.
