Declarative DAG runtime for coding-agent workflows with verification, resume, replay and effect checks
taskflow is a declarative TypeScript runtime for coding-agent workflows that turns a graph into a verifiable execution contract, runs phases in isolation and lists Hermes Agent as one of its host adapters.
What taskflow does
A flow is a DAG with 12 phase types, budgets, retries, approvals, isolation, resume, replay, trace and recompute. The 1.0 release adds a declared-effect contract: an agent can propose content, but for admitted filesystem-write targets the path is explicit and the final mutation goes through a resource transaction (snapshot, lease, durable intent, stage, then commit, or restore and reject). Typed PathRef, SecretRef and ServiceRef references and ledger-backed why-effect explainers record what happened.
Host adapters for Pi, Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Grok Build and Hermes Agent share the same flow contract, though support remains host-specific. A Control Plane provides authenticated multi-project admission, global concurrency, durable replay, approvals and receipts through a CLI, MCP and a local-token WebUI. The README is explicit that this is not an OS sandbox, and that resolve-only hosts cannot block every write to an undeclared path.
Key features
- DAG workflows with 12 phase types, budgets, retries and approvals
- Resume, replay, trace and recompute of runs
- Declared filesystem effects applied through a snapshot, lease, stage and commit transaction
- Host adapters for Pi, Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Grok Build and Hermes Agent
- Control Plane with CLI, MCP and a local WebUI for approvals and receipts
When to use it
- Running a multi-phase coding workflow in which each phase is isolated and verified
- Replaying a past run to see why a file change was made
- Requiring human approval before a coding agent writes to declared paths
Who it is for: Developers who orchestrate coding agents through multi-step workflows and want verifiable, replayable runs.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
Supports Hermes Agent as one of six host adapters that share the same flow contract.
How to install taskflow
These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.
git clone https://github.com/heggria/taskflow.git
cd taskflow
git checkout v1.0.0
pnpm installRequirements: Node.js 22.19.0 or newer, and pnpm to build from source
Note: taskflow is not an OS sandbox, and hosts that can only resolve paths cannot prevent every write to an undeclared path.
FAQ
What is taskflow?
taskflow is a declarative runtime for coding-agent workflows. It runs DAGs of phases in isolation, verifies them and can resume or replay runs.
Does taskflow work with Hermes Agent?
Yes, Hermes Agent is one of its host adapters, alongside Pi, Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode and Grok Build. The README says support remains host-specific, and the host commands are in its guides.
How do I install taskflow?
Clone the repository, check out v1.0.0 and run pnpm install, which requires Node.js 22.19.0 or newer. The README also shows npm packages such as pi-taskflow and codex-taskflow for specific hosts.
