Per-folder scoped Hermes Agents with their own config, skills and memory, launched by the hermes command

In short

Ankh.md is an MIT-licensed framework that lets you run individually scoped Hermes Agents per project folder, each with its own config, skills, memory and identity, while the plain hermes command still starts the default agent elsewhere.

What Ankh.md does

After installation, running hermes inside a folder that contains a valid .agent directory starts an Ankh agent scoped to that folder, and running it anywhere else launches the default, untouched Hermes Agent. Each scoped agent keeps its config, skills, sessions and memories in .agent/. A global ~/.hermes baseline is merged with local .agent/config.yaml overrides, project skills live in .agent/skills/, and .agent/agent.jsonc sets a custom title, prompt and instructions.

Setup is done with Bun: bun bootstrap downloads Hermes Agent, patches it and deploys Ankh to ~/.agent/extensions/ankh, and the installer is meant to configure PATH automatically. The repository includes an examples/ folder for building your own agents. The README says not every Hermes Agent feature is supported, and that gateway, cron and scoped auth are still work in progress and untested.

Key features

  • Per-folder agents with config, skills, sessions and memories in .agent/
  • Config merge of the global ~/.hermes baseline with local .agent/config.yaml
  • Project-local skills in .agent/skills/
  • Custom title, prompt and instructions in .agent/agent.jsonc
  • Default Hermes Agent left untouched outside Ankh folders

When to use it

  • Giving each repository its own Hermes Agent with a different skill set
  • Using a custom model or instructions for one project without changing global config
  • Building specialized agents by adapting the included examples

Who it is for: Hermes Agent users on macOS who want a differently configured agent for each project folder.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Built for Hermes Agent: it patches a downloaded copy of Hermes Agent so that the hermes command runs a folder-scoped agent when a .agent directory is present.

How to install Ankh.md

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

bun bootstrap

Requirements: macOS (the only tested platform), a terminal, Bun, Git, a configured Hermes Agent and Python 3.11+

Note: Gateway, cron and scoped auth are work in progress and untested, so features such as Telegram and WhatsApp are not yet enabled, and only macOS has been tested.
