Coding Posture

Single SKILL.md that gives coding agents task-aware working modes such as debug, review and migrate

In short

Coding Posture is a single SKILL.md that makes a coding agent choose a working mode before non-trivial tasks and follow that mode's checklist. It works with Hermes, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Pi.

What Coding Posture does

Before non-trivial work, the agent picks one of eleven modes: debug, fix, review, test-first, refactor, optimize, migrate, upgrade, integrate, spike or unstuck. Each has a core discipline, such as reproduce first for debug, see the test fail before implementing for test-first, rollback path before touching state for migrate, and stop editing and summarize evidence for unstuck. The cycle is gather context, localize, make the smallest change, run the real check and read the output.

Three rules apply in every mode: verify by running the real test, build or repro; never report a result you did not run or weaken a test to get green; and no destructive commands such as force push, reset --hard, drop or rm -rf without explicit scope. The README says it exists to stop agents behaving like optimistic elevators with write access. For Hermes, you drop skills/coding-posture/ into ~/.hermes/skills/, where it is auto-discovered. Claude Code and Codex have plugin installs.

Key features

  • Eleven task modes with a checklist each
  • Always-on rules against faked green tests and destructive commands
  • Verification by running the real check
  • Single standard SKILL.md file
  • Plugin installs for Claude Code and Codex
  • Drop-in folder for Hermes

When to use it

  • Keeping Hermes from thrashing on a stuck bug
  • Requiring a rollback path before a migration
  • Making a code review cite file and line evidence

Who it is for: Developers who run coding agents and want consistent working discipline across tools.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Hermes is named among the supported agents, and the README gives a Hermes install path through the ~/.hermes/skills folder.
