Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft

Hermes Agent plans, Jev picks bounded actions and Mineflayer executes in Minecraft

In short

Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft is a demo and reproduction in which Hermes Agent plans, the Jev model picks one bounded action at a time, and a Mineflayer harness validates and executes it. No model sees screenshots or sends keypresses.

What Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft does

The project splits a Minecraft agent into three parts. Hermes Agent plans at milestones, Jev (TypeSafe's System-One model) picks one bounded action at a time, and a Mineflayer harness decides which actions are valid and executes them. harness.mjs runs a pure-Node Minecraft 1.16.5 server (flying-squid, no Java) with one bot and an HTTP API of /observe, /options, /act and /plan. controller.mjs runs the loop, calling Hermes through hermes chat -Q --oneshot for plans and Jev through OpenRouter for decisions.

It is an independent, smaller implementation of the architecture used by rmalde/minecraft-agent, which has no license, so nothing was copied from it. The included report describes an Ender Dragon run on Linux in 7:45 with 6 bed blasts and no deaths, against the original's 8:43. Every plan and decision is logged to runs/demo/controller.jsonl with probabilities, confidence, cost and latency. A Hermes skill, minecraft-bounded-agent, lets a Hermes session drive the harness itself, and CONTROLLER=hermes swaps Jev out for Hermes.

Key features

  • Hermes as planner, called with hermes chat -Q --oneshot
  • Jev as controller through OpenRouter, or Hermes with CONTROLLER=hermes
  • Pure-Node Minecraft 1.16.5 server with no Java needed
  • Bounded-action HTTP API where the harness decides validity
  • Per-decision logs with probabilities, confidence, cost and latency
  • minecraft-bounded-agent skill for driving the harness from Hermes

When to use it

  • Studying a planner and controller split without screenshots or generated code
  • Reproducing the Ender Dragon result with Hermes as the planner
  • Letting a Hermes session play Minecraft through its terminal tool

Who it is for: Developers and researchers interested in planner and controller agent architectures, using Hermes as the planner.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent is the planner, and the repository includes a Hermes skill and uses Hermes with any provider you have logged in.

How to install Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

git clone https://github.com/teknium1/hermes-and-jev-play-minecraft && cd hermes-and-jev-play-minecraft
npm install
RUN_ID=demo node harness.mjs
RUN_ID=demo WAYPOINT='{"x":380,"z":16}' TARGETS='{"dirt":4}' MAX_STEPS=14 node controller.mjs

Requirements: Node.js 18+, Hermes Agent logged in to any provider, and an OPENROUTER_API_KEY for the Jev controller (or CONTROLLER=hermes without one)

Note: The default Jev controller needs an OpenRouter API key; without one you must set CONTROLLER=hermes.

FAQ

What is Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft?

It is a project where Hermes Agent plans, the Jev model chooses one bounded action at a time and a Mineflayer harness executes it. No model sees screenshots or sends keypresses.

Does Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft work with Hermes Agent?

Yes. Hermes Agent is the planner, called through hermes chat -Q --oneshot, and any provider that Hermes can use will work.

What do I need to run Hermes and Jev Play Minecraft?

You need Node.js 18 or newer and a Hermes Agent install that answers hermes chat -Q --oneshot -q hi. The Jev controller also needs an OPENROUTER_API_KEY, or you can set CONTROLLER=hermes.
