Obscura Browser Plugin

SGavrl/hermes-plugin-obscura

Hermes plugin that runs browser tasks on the Obscura headless browser instead of Chrome

In short

Obscura Browser Plugin is a Hermes Agent plugin that routes the agent's browser tools through Obscura, a Rust headless browser that speaks the Chrome DevTools Protocol without running Chrome or Chromium.

What Obscura Browser Plugin does

The plugin implements the Hermes BrowserProvider lifecycle and registers through the standard plugin entry point, so it touches no Hermes core files. It is opt-in: you select it by setting browser.cloud_provider to obscura in config.yaml. Because Obscura emulates headless Chrome over CDP, the existing Hermes browser tools drive it unchanged.

In local mode, the default, it spawns obscura serve on a free port for each session and shuts it down when the session closes. In remote mode, you point OBSCURA_CDP_URL at a running server, for example the h4ckf0r0day/obscura Docker image on port 9222, and the plugin connects without starting or stopping it. An optional OBSCURA_STEALTH setting passes --stealth for a consistent fingerprint and tracker blocking. The CDP endpoint has no built-in authentication, so the README advises keeping it on loopback or a trusted network, with an SSH tunnel for remote hosts.

Key features

  • Local mode that spawns and tears down obscura serve per session
  • Remote mode that connects to an existing Obscura server or Docker container
  • Opt-in selection through browser.cloud_provider in config.yaml
  • Optional --stealth flag via OBSCURA_STEALTH
  • Configurable binary path, port and startup timeout through environment variables

When to use it

  • Running Hermes browser tasks without installing Chrome or Chromium
  • Sharing one Obscura container across several Hermes sessions
  • Scaling the browser backend separately from the Hermes host

Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who want a lighter headless browser backend for web automation and scraping.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

It is a Hermes plugin that registers an Obscura browser provider using ctx.register_browser_provider.
