Aphrodite

PlayForm/Aphrodite

Compression proxy that replaces bulky tool output with short previews before it reaches Hermes Agent

In short

Aphrodite is a Rust compression proxy and preview pipeline that ships as a Hermes Agent plugin. It intercepts tool output such as build logs, file reads and search results and gives the agent a compact structured preview instead of the raw text.

What Aphrodite does

Aphrodite targets a specific waste in agent sessions: every file read, build, code search or browser open can flood the context with compilation logs, accessibility trees and JSON blobs. Aphrodite intercepts that output before it reaches the model and substitutes a short preview, for example a build summary with error and warning counts, a test summary with pass and fail counts, or a function and struct outline for a source file. The agent retrieves the full content only when it needs it.

It is a single Rust binary with a type-aware classifier, driven by TOML configuration with optional config auto-reload. For Hermes it installs as a plugin made of a dylib plus a standalone proxy binary, which a download script fetches from GitHub Releases into ~/.hermes/aphrodite/binaries/ with SHA-256 verification. The README reports roughly 10 ms end-to-end and compression of up to 610x on its standard corpus. If the binaries are missing, the plugin logs the setup command and stays disabled until they are present.

Key features

  • Type-aware classifier for build logs, test output, terminal, code files, grep, search and git results
  • Compact previews such as a test line with pass, fail and ignored counts
  • TOML-driven configuration with opt-in auto-reload
  • Hermes plugin install with SHA-256 verified binary download
  • PowerShell download script for Windows
  • Alternative cargo install route for the standalone proxy binary

When to use it

  • Cutting the context spent on noisy build and test output in long coding sessions
  • Keeping search and git output compact when an agent explores a large repository
  • Saving token budget for agents that read many files

Who it is for: Hermes Agent users running long coding sessions who want to reduce how much raw tool output fills the model context.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Built for Hermes Agent as a plugin, enabled with hermes plugins enable aphrodite after the setup step.

How to install Aphrodite

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

git clone https://github.com/PlayForm/Aphrodite-Hermes.git
cd Aphrodite-Hermes
ln -s "$(pwd)" ~/.hermes/plugins/aphrodite
bash download.sh

Requirements: Hermes Agent with plugin support; the plugin route needs no Rust toolchain because the setup script downloads the binary and dylib from GitHub Releases
