Search and resume local transcripts from Claude Code, Codex, Hermes and other coding agents
memex is a Rust tool that indexes local agent conversation history from tools including Hermes, so you and your agents can search past work, read original transcripts and track token usage. For Hermes it reads history and usage from the local state.db.
What memex does
memex indexes conversations from coding tools and lets you browse them in a terminal UI or search them from the command line. Keyword search uses BM25, optional local embeddings add semantic and hybrid search, and history can be queried across machines over SSH. It can also search saved Claude and Codex memories and track token usage from local logs. Resume opens an existing session in its original tool where that tool supports it.
The README's engine table covers 17 tools, among them Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Pi, OpenClaw, GitHub Copilot CLI, Kiro CLI and Hermes. For Hermes, history and token usage are supported and read from its local state.db, while resume, saved memories and import are not. Plaintext reasoning is indexed only with --include-reasoning. Embeddings, reasoning and token tracking are off by default, and background indexing runs with memex daemon enable --continuous.
Key features
- BM25 keyword search with optional local semantic and hybrid search
- Terminal UI to browse sessions and read full transcripts
- Resume sessions in their original tool where supported
- Opt-in token usage tracking from local logs
- Query history across machines over SSH
- Hermes history and usage read from its local state.db
When to use it
- Finding how you solved a problem in an earlier Hermes or Claude Code session
- Letting an agent search your past transcripts before starting work
- Comparing token usage across several coding agents
Who it is for: Developers who use several coding agents and want one searchable index of their past sessions.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
Hermes is one of 17 supported engines, and the repository carries the hermes-agent topic. Hermes history and usage work, but resume, saved memories and import do not.
How to install memex
These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.
brew install nicosuave/tap/memex
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nicosuave/memex/main/scripts/setup.sh | sh FAQ
What is memex?
memex indexes local conversation history from coding agents so you can search it, read the original transcripts and resume sessions. It can also track token usage from local logs.
Does memex work with Hermes Agent?
Yes, for history and token usage, which it reads from Hermes' local state.db. Resuming a Hermes session from memex, saved memories and importing into Hermes are not supported.
How do I install memex?
Run brew install nicosuave/tap/memex, or use the curl installer script from the README. Then run memex index to index your local agent history.
