HutchDB

ExpeditedProjects/hutchdb

Schema-free MCP database that lets Claude Code, Codex, Hermes and other agents share records

In short

HutchDB is an open-source database for AI agents that exposes schema-optional collections over MCP, and Hermes is named among the clients that can read and update the same records. It replaces scattered markdown files with queryable data.

What HutchDB does

HutchDB Core is a headless, single-user MCP server that gives every connected agent the same durable, structured data. Collections are schema-optional Postgres JSONB with full-text search, optional validation and view definitions, and they are created automatically on the first write. There is no dashboard, login screen or OAuth step, only an MCP endpoint and a Postgres database you control.

The idea is to replace TODO.md files and memory notes with records that several agents can filter, aggregate and update without overwriting each other. The README lists research collections, trackers, multi-agent pipelines with status fields, long-running project state and stored playbooks as typical patterns. Web views, published pages, social login and organization sharing belong to the separate hosted HutchDB Cloud, not to this repository.

Key features

  • MCP server backed by Postgres JSONB with full-text search
  • Collections auto-create on first write, no schema design up front
  • Optional validation and view definitions
  • Multiple agents can read and update the same records
  • Optional bearer-token protection for MCP calls
  • Docker Compose quick start

When to use it

  • Keeping a bug or lead tracker that Hermes and other agents update mid-task
  • Handing records between agents in a pipeline using a status field
  • Storing decisions and open questions so a new session does not need a re-brief

Who it is for: People running several MCP-capable agents who want shared, queryable working data instead of markdown files.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Hermes is listed in the description among the MCP clients that can store and query HutchDB records, next to Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

cd hutchdb
docker compose up

Requirements: Docker with Compose for the quick start

Note: Core is headless and single-user; web views and organization sharing are only in the separate HutchDB Cloud.
