Obsidian MCP Server

Vasallo94/obsidian-mcp-server

MCP server that lets Hermes, Codex and Claude Code read, search and safely edit Obsidian notes

In short

Obsidian MCP Server is a Python MCP server that lets AI agents such as Hermes, Codex, Claude Code and Claude Desktop work inside an Obsidian vault. It reads notes, searches context, inspects links and optionally creates or edits notes.

What Obsidian MCP Server does

The server's core tool set is always on and vault-agnostic: vault diagnostics, task routing, MCP client root inspection, note listing, reading, metadata inspection and search, plus vault context resources for profiles, skills, standards and local docs. Behavior comes from the vault itself, where .agents/vault.yaml, rules and skills layer vault-specific profiles on top of a reusable core.

Optional tool sets are switched on from .agents/vault.yaml or the OBSIDIAN_MCP_TOOL_SETS environment variable. They include notes_write (create, patch, move, delete), vault_analysis (statistics, tags, links, backlinks, graph), agents_admin, YouTube transcript extraction, obsidianrag for semantic search through the external ObsidianRAG service, and canvas helpers. Write tools are opt-in, protected paths are blocked and large reads are capped. Hermes setup is covered in docs/installation.md.

Key features

  • Core tools to list, read, search and inspect notes and links
  • Vault context resources for profiles, skills and standards
  • Opt-in notes_write tools to create, patch, move and delete notes
  • vault_analysis tools for tags, backlinks and graph data
  • Semantic search through the external ObsidianRAG service
  • Protected paths and capped reads by default

When to use it

  • Letting a Hermes agent read and search an Obsidian vault
  • Letting several coding agents share one vault with the same rules
  • Creating or patching notes under guardrails when write tools are enabled

Who it is for: Obsidian users who want AI agents such as Hermes, Codex or Claude Code to work with their notes through MCP.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Hermes is one of the named clients alongside Codex, Claude Code and Claude Desktop, with Hermes setup documented in docs/installation.md.
