Private local-first context retrieval for Hermes agents through a read-only MCP server
Agent Context Kit is a private, local-first, Hermes-first layer that lets an agent retrieve cited working context from files and meetings. It exposes three read-only MCP tools to Hermes Agent.
What Agent Context Kit does
Agent Context Kit is a private, local-first, Hermes-first layer that lets an agent retrieve real working context with source, date and limits instead of dumping transcripts into a prompt. Version 0.1 has two connectors: files, which imports .md and .txt from a configured inbox, and fathom, a read-only meeting connector that uses an API key. Data goes into a private SQLite database with FTS5 search and a compact Context Ledger, kept outside Git.
Hermes reaches it through an MCP server over stdio, with no HTTP port, exposing three tools: search_context, list_recent and get_context. A Hermes skill and a Context Map help a new session find the right route. The installer checks Python, SQLite, FTS5 and Hermes, creates a vault at ~/.context-kit/vault with 0700 permissions, plants a synthetic demo and keeps a backup for rollback. The README lists WhatsApp, Gmail, webhooks, embeddings, OAuth and daemons as out of scope for v0.1, and it is written in Portuguese.
Key features
- Files connector for .md and .txt notes in an explicit inbox
- Read-only Fathom meeting connector using an API key
- Private SQLite and FTS5 vault with a compact Context Ledger
- MCP over stdio with search_context, list_recent and get_context
- Hermes skill and Context Map for routing in new sessions
- Receipts, status, doctor, idempotent ledger rebuild and non-destructive uninstall
When to use it
- Asking Hermes what was promised in a meeting and getting an answer with the source
- Searching a private folder of notes from a Hermes session
- Keeping meeting transcripts on your own server instead of pasting them into prompts
Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who want cited, private retrieval of their own notes and meetings on a machine they control.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
It is built Hermes-first: the installer registers an MCP server and a routing skill for Hermes and checks for a Hermes install.
How to install Agent Context Kit
These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/okjpg/agent-context-kit/main/install.sh | bashRequirements: Python, SQLite with FTS5 and Hermes Agent (checked by the installer); a Fathom API key only for the optional meeting connector
Note: It is an early 0.1.0 release with a limited feature set.
FAQ
What is Agent Context Kit?
Agent Context Kit is a local-first context retrieval layer for Hermes agents. It indexes files and optional Fathom meetings in a private SQLite database and serves them through a read-only MCP server.
How do I install Agent Context Kit?
Run the one-line install.sh with curl, or clone the repository and run bash install.sh. The installer creates the vault, installs the MCP server and skill and can roll back if something fails.
Is Agent Context Kit free and open source?
Yes. The repository is published under the MIT license.
