OpenDesign

nexu-io/open-design

Local-first design workspace that turns your coding agent, Hermes Agent included, into a design tool

In short

OpenDesign is a local-first, Apache-2.0 desktop workspace where a coding agent produces prototypes, slides, images and motion graphics as real files. Hermes Agent is one of the agents it connects to, through the command od mcp install hermes.

What OpenDesign does

OpenDesign is a collaborative design agent workspace. You start with a brief, then a coding agent or OpenDesign Cloud builds a prototype that follows your design system. Studio views cover interactive prototypes with live preview, slide decks with speaker notes, generated images, and motion graphics exported to MP4. The project description also names HTML, PDF and PPTX as export formats.

It reaches agents in two ways. For agents that consume OpenDesign, it offers skills, a CLI and MCP, and the README lists Hermes Agent as supported with the setup command od mcp install hermes. For agents that OpenDesign launches itself, it uses native runtime adapters, with DeepSeek's official dsh CLI as the first-class example. If no CLI is installed, a bring-your-own-key proxy accepts a base URL, API key and model for providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, Google Gemini, Ollama, LM Studio and vLLM.

Key features

  • Prototype, slides, image and motion-graphics studios in one project
  • Design systems, skills and plugins that can be inspected and adapted
  • Exports to HTML, PDF, PPTX and MP4
  • One-line MCP setup per agent, such as od mcp install hermes
  • Bring-your-own-key proxy for OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Gemini, Ollama and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints

When to use it

  • Have Hermes Agent draft a landing page prototype that follows an existing design system
  • Build a slide deck with speaker notes from a written brief
  • Share a prototype with teammates for feedback and let the agent refine it in the same project

Who it is for: Developers and small teams who already work with coding agents such as Hermes Agent and want a design workflow that runs on their own machine.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent is listed as a supported agent among many others, connected with od mcp install hermes. The project is a general design workspace and is not built specifically for Hermes.

How to install OpenDesign

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

od mcp install hermes

Note: The optional hosted OpenDesign Go plan is paid, starting at $8 for the first month, while the Apache-2.0 desktop app can be used with your own API keys.
