Handwriting-first Hermes Agent client for Kindle Scribe, BOOX and Android stylus tablets

In short

Hermes Notebook is a handwriting-first companion client for Hermes Agent that runs on e-ink and stylus tablets. It sends recognized handwritten notes into the same Hermes sessions, memory, skills and tools that other channels use.

What Hermes Notebook does

Hermes Notebook is a handwriting-first companion for Hermes Agent. You write on a Kindle Scribe, a BOOX tablet or an Android stylus tablet, the page is kept safe offline, and the recognized note is sent into the same Hermes sessions, memory, skills, tools and personality used by its other channels. The stock Kindle Scribe uses a browser surface because it cannot sideload native apps, while BOOX and Android tablets use a native tester client being built in Hermes pull request 61687.

Traffic flows from the device to a private Notebook bridge, then to a localhost Notebook adapter on port 8793, then to the Hermes gateway. The device never sees a Hermes model credential. Kindle features include Live Page annotations, Redline suggestions and a Journey view, and the Android client uses on-device ML Kit handwriting recognition. The server side needs Node.js 20 or 22 with no npm runtime dependencies, and compatibility is gated against an exact upstream Hermes Agent commit.

Key features

  • Kindle Scribe notebook in the stock browser with Live Page, Redline and Journey
  • Native Android APK for BOOX with pen and eraser capture and offline persistence
  • On-device ML Kit handwriting recognition on Android stylus tablets
  • Localhost Notebook adapter that creates normal Hermes message events
  • Hermes model credentials never reach the device

When to use it

  • Taking handwritten notes on a Kindle Scribe and getting a Hermes reply with tools applied
  • Keeping an offline-safe ink notebook that syncs into existing Hermes memory
  • Annotating a page with Live Page and reviewing Redline suggestions from the agent

Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who prefer writing by hand on an e-ink or stylus tablet over typing.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

It is built for Hermes Agent, connecting to the Hermes gateway and the installed kindle-scribe plugin so handwritten notes join normal Hermes sessions.

Requirements: Node.js 20 or 22, a configured Hermes gateway with the kindle-scribe plugin enabled; Windows 11 is the reference host

Note: The BOOX and Android stylus clients are tester builds that still require physical-device QA.
