Engram-compatible memory provider for Hermes Agent with automatic recall and capture on every turn
Hermes Recall is an Engram-compatible memory provider for Hermes Agent that makes recall and capture deterministic: Hermes searches memory before each non-trivial turn and saves turn data afterwards, instead of leaving it to the model.
What Hermes Recall does
When Engram is connected to Hermes only as an MCP server, the model decides whether to search memory and every API call carries about 19 Engram tool schemas. Hermes Recall uses the native Hermes MemoryProvider interface instead. Before every non-trivial turn Hermes runs the search, and turns with hits start with a line such as Recall, project, recalled 3 memories. Prompts, tool results, answers and subagent results are captured in the background, with a compaction archive written before context compression.
It talks to the same local Engram server as other agents, so a memory saved from Hermes appears in Pi, OpenCode or Claude Code with the same id. If no server answers, it starts engram serve itself unless ENGRAM_URL is set or autostart is off, and it refuses servers with a different instance id. The model gets compact tools such as mem_search, mem_save, mem_update, mem_context and mem_pin, about 4 KB in total. Subagents, cron jobs and memory flushes read memory but never write it.
Key features
- Recall before every non-trivial turn, decided by Hermes rather than the model
- Background capture of prompts, tool results, answers and subagent results
- Compact memory tools including mem_search, mem_save, mem_update and mem_context
- Shares memories and ids with other agents using the same Engram server
- Starts a local Engram server automatically when none is running
When to use it
- Making sure Hermes always checks memory before starting work
- Sharing one memory store between Hermes, Pi, OpenCode and Claude Code
- Replacing an Engram MCP server to cut tool schema tokens per call
Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who already use or want to use Engram as their long-term memory store.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
It is built for Hermes Agent as a memory provider plugin, activated with memory.provider set to recall rather than through plugins.enabled.
How to install Hermes Recall
These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.
hermes plugins install goldenSniperOS/hermes-recall
hermes config set memory.provider recall
hermes memory statusRequirements: Hermes Agent with memory-provider plugin support (tested with v0.21.0) and the Engram binary on PATH or set through ENGRAM_BIN (tested with Engram 2.0.0 and 3.0.0)
Note: The README describes it as an independent community project and includes a Not affiliated section.
FAQ
What is Hermes Recall?
Hermes Recall is a memory provider plugin that connects Hermes Agent to a local Engram server. It runs recall and capture automatically on every turn.
Does Hermes Recall work with Hermes Agent?
Yes, it is built for Hermes Agent and was tested with v0.21.0. Install it with hermes plugins install, set memory.provider to recall, and restart Hermes.
