Local SQLite memory for coding agents with a Hermes Agent installer, MCP server and code-aware recall
LaPis is a local, persistent memory layer that gives Hermes Agent, Claude Code, Pi Coding Agent and MCP clients long-term project memory backed by SQLite. For Hermes Agent users it installs with one npx command that wires up MCP tools and hooks.
What LaPis does
LaPis stores architectural decisions, bug fixes, project constraints, patterns, code context and documentation across sessions in a single SQLite database by default, with no hosted memory service and no API keys. New sessions start with relevant memories loaded, similar saves are deduplicated, and memories linked to code that has since changed lose confidence, so stale knowledge is flagged instead of trusted. A cleanup routine called the Dream Cycle removes superseded and never-useful entries.
For Hermes Agent, the installer writes an mcp_servers.lapis entry and hooks into $HERMES_HOME/config.yaml, records first-use consent and adds a Hermes skill. Hermes then needs a restart or /reload-mcp. LaPis also indexes code with web-tree-sitter for JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Python, Rust and SQL, indexes Markdown documentation, and offers an optional HTTP API, a memory dashboard command and a standalone MCP server.
Key features
- Persistent project memory in a local SQLite database
- One-command Hermes Agent install with a doctor check
- Automatic recall at session start and deduplication of similar memories
- Trust tracking that lowers confidence in memories tied to changed code
- Code and documentation indexing for search
- Standalone MCP server for other MCP-compatible clients
When to use it
- Keeping decisions and bug fixes available to Hermes Agent between sessions
- Replacing hand-maintained context files with automatic project memory
- Sharing one local memory store between Hermes Agent and Claude Code
Who it is for: Developers who use Hermes Agent or other coding agents and want local project memory that needs no hosted service.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent is one of its supported integrations next to Pi Coding Agent, Claude Code and generic MCP clients. The Hermes integration uses Hermes' MCP client and shell-hook system.
How to install LaPis
These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.
npx -y @genegulanesjr/lapis hermes install
npx -y @genegulanesjr/lapis hermes doctorRequirements: Node.js 20+ and better-sqlite3; no Python dependency, API keys or cloud services
FAQ
What is LaPis?
LaPis is a local, persistent memory layer for coding agents. It keeps decisions, fixes, constraints and code context in SQLite so they can be recalled in later sessions.
Does LaPis work with Hermes Agent?
Yes. The README has a Hermes Agent integration that writes MCP server and hook entries into the Hermes config.yaml and adds a Hermes skill. Restart Hermes or run /reload-mcp to load the tools.
How do I install LaPis for Hermes Agent?
Run npx -y @genegulanesjr/lapis hermes install, then npx -y @genegulanesjr/lapis hermes doctor to verify the install. Restart Hermes afterwards, since hooks load at process start.
