Local-first continuity memory with a hash-chained ledger and an optional Hermes provider plugin
Total Recall is a standalone, local-first continuity memory framework that keeps an append-only ledger as its source of truth and verifies integrity before rehydrating state. Hermes Agent can use it through an optional provider plugin in hermes-plugin/total-recall.
What Total Recall does
Total Recall treats agent memory as something that must be provable, not only retrievable. It keeps an append-only, hash-chained event ledger as the source of truth, reduces it into deterministic state, creates signed checkpoints and anchors, and fails closed when verification does not pass before rehydration. Local retrieval indexes can be rebuilt from the ledger, recall answers carry citations, and freshness checks flag stale or superseded promises and decisions.
It is framework-agnostic and does not depend on OpenClaw, OpenBrain or Hermes. For Hermes Agent, the total-recall hermes install command detects the Python environment Hermes runs under, installs total-recall-core there when needed and writes the plugin under ~/.hermes/plugins/memory/total-recall. Other pieces include verified session resume packets, temporal graph timelines, explicit federation between workspaces, encrypted backup push and pull, and a dashboard console for trust, incidents, knowledge, vault and backups.
Key features
- Append-only event ledger with hash chaining
- Signed checkpoints and fail-closed verification before rehydration
- Verified session resume packets for compaction, restart and handoff
- Cited recall with freshness checks for stale decisions
- Encrypted backup push and pull with device identity
- Dashboard console for trust, incidents, knowledge, vault and backups
When to use it
- Letting a Hermes agent resume work after a restart from a verified state
- Checking whether a remembered decision has been superseded
- Reconstructing what an agent knew at an earlier point in time
- Backing up agent memory to encrypted storage
Who it is for: Hermes Agent users who rely on agent memory for real work and want it verifiable, local and auditable.
How it fits with Hermes Agent
Total Recall is framework-agnostic, and Hermes Agent uses it through an optional memory provider plugin in hermes-plugin/total-recall with a dedicated installer command.

FAQ
What is Total Recall?
Total Recall is a local-first continuity memory framework for agent runtimes. It stores an append-only ledger, reduces it to deterministic state and verifies integrity before the agent reuses any memory.
Does Total Recall work with Hermes Agent?
Yes. Hermes Agent can use it through the optional provider plugin in hermes-plugin/total-recall, installed with the total-recall hermes install command.
Is Total Recall free and open source?
Yes, under AGPL-3.0-or-later, including for commercial use if you comply with the AGPL. Proprietary, hosted or embedded use that cannot comply needs a separate commercial license from the copyright holder.
