openclaw-to-hermes

Migration tool that moves an OpenClaw setup to Hermes Agent, with dry-run and backup

In short

openclaw-to-hermes is a Python migration tool that moves an OpenClaw installation to Hermes Agent, converting config, persona, memory files, skills and credentials. Since Hermes Agent v0.3.0 the native hermes claw migrate command covers the same path, so this tool mainly suits older Hermes versions.

What openclaw-to-hermes does

The oc2hermes command discovers OpenClaw agents, workspaces, channels and credentials, then writes the Hermes equivalents. It maps ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json into ~/.hermes/config.yaml, copies SOUL.md to ~/.hermes/SOUL.md, moves MEMORY.md, USER.md and other workspace files into ~/.hermes/memories/, archives daily logs and skills, and writes auth.json in the nested format Hermes expects. Credentials are read from both ~/.openclaw/ and /etc/openclaw-tenants/.

Before changing anything it creates a backup archive, and --dry-run previews the whole run. It can also set up a systemd gateway service with lingering, migrate a single agent with --agent, and skip starting the gateway with --no-start. The author built it from a real production migration to fix issues in the earlier hermes-migrate tool. The README now recommends running the native hermes claw migrate first and keeping this tool as a reference implementation and for Hermes versions before v0.3.0.

Key features

  • Discovers OpenClaw agents, workspaces, channels and credentials
  • Migrates SOUL.md, MEMORY.md, workspace files, skills and memory archives
  • Maps OpenClaw config to Hermes config.yaml, including dict-style primary and fallback models
  • Backup archive before any destructive step, plus a dry-run mode
  • Optional systemd gateway service setup with lingering
  • Migrates a single agent at a time with --agent

When to use it

  • Moving an OpenClaw agent and its memory to Hermes Agent on an older Hermes version
  • Previewing a migration with --dry-run before touching ~/.hermes
  • Using it as a reference for how OpenClaw files map onto Hermes paths

Who it is for: OpenClaw users moving to Hermes Agent, especially those on Hermes versions older than v0.3.0.

How it fits with Hermes Agent

Built for migrating from OpenClaw to Hermes Agent; the native hermes claw migrate command covers the same path in Hermes v0.3.0 and later.

How to install openclaw-to-hermes

These commands are copied from the project's README. Check the repository for the latest steps before you run them.

pip install openclaw-to-hermes
pipx install openclaw-to-hermes
oc2hermes --dry-run
oc2hermes

Requirements: OpenClaw installed and configured (~/.openclaw/openclaw.json exists), Hermes Agent installed or auto-installed, and Python 3.10+

Note: As of Hermes Agent v0.3.0 the native hermes claw migrate command covers the full migration, so the README recommends it first and positions this tool for older Hermes versions and as a reference.
